Here & There, A Crack Rosemary S. Mountain

“Here & There, A Crack” was written upon my introduction to the Buchla synthesizer. With the exception of a few vocally-produced chirps in the middle section, all sounds were produced exclusively with the machine. After recording various patches individually, I sorted them into “combinable” and “non-combinable” material (based on personal æsthetics). The combinable material was then spliced and layered to form brief moments of complex sonorities which were then spliced (according to intuitive sense of timing) into one of the three non-combinable sounds—the low rumble. I inserted an extended length of another “non-combinable” patch into the middle of the piece as a contrast in mood; the remaining patch was then layered, duplicated, and spliced onto the beginning and end (in reverse directions) to operate as a kind of bridge to and from the section via the rumbling road—with “cracks” allowing glimpses of sonic scenery.
