Asphatherios was created from the idea-seed of a solution to the aspect of performance in ‘tape music’: the experimentation with sound’s spatial movement, directly affected by a team of performers. Each performer is in charge of a speaker, projecting a single channel. Each channel is relatively independent, having similar role to that of a performer in chamber music ensemble. The development of the piece is based on a short electronic ‘motif’, which is constantly transformed. In the beginning, the motif is presented in a simple manner by the three speakers. The addition of the fourth speaker calls for the establishment of the motif’s alteration. The new results are unrecognizable, alien to the first motive. Gradually, concrete elements are added to the electronic ones. Asphatherios, an invented word, represents the ‘world’ of this work.
