a composition employing unmediated cultural heritage — be it form, technique, recorded sounds — might be better appreciated as an analytical methodology to the understanding of the source rather than a composition in its own right. when, through its mediation, recognition of the source identity is somewhat blurred, even obliterated, a context can be developed in which the existence of the new work is not justified simply through umbilical reference to the original.
