As Wang-Fo paints, water fills the chamber. A boat with Ling in it approaches: “The fragile rowboat grew under the strokes of the painter’s brushes and now occupied the entire foreground of the silken scroll. The rhythmic sound of the oars rose suddenly in the distance, quick and eager like the beating of wings.” Ling helps Wang-Fo into the boat and they row away into the painting.
