This piece derives from librarians’ meeting notes dated February 10, 1910, from the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The topic: “The Influence of the Nickelodeons upon the Reading of the Public.” The sentiments and fears expressed about nickelodeons anticipate articles on the insidious influence of TV, comics, rock and roll, and the Internet. The notes are supplemented with contemporary texts about matters discussed at the meeting. Read by Maxine Heller and the composer.
Composed primarily with the Kyma system, assisted with some home grown C++ utility programs that assist with decision making (pseudo-random number generators) and repetitive calculations. The piece was mixed in Digidesign Session8 software. Hardware was limited to the PC computer and the Capybara, Kyma’s DSP box.
