Union Square John J.A. Jannone

Union Square and Behind the Counter are two contrasting works composed for the same dance, commissioned by choreographer Kristin Fieseler. Both were composed to a videotape of the nearly-completed dance in rehearsal. Both pieces were “performed” in real time while watching the videotaped choreography, using custom-built software developed in the Max/MSP programming environment. Union Square, the work used in performance, was created through “slowed granulation” technique similar to that of Prelude. Behind the Counter uses a more conventional “laptop DJ” approach, synchronizing and processing audio loops, with extensive use of ring modulation.
