Birthday David R. Mooney

The source of this piece is a 1964 recording of my mother’s bridge club. The recording was made on an inexpensive tape recorder and is of extremely poor quality. It was meant as a joke but almost immediately I realized it was a metaphor of my relationship with my mother. Which voice is hers? What is she trying to tell me? The phrase containing the word “birthday” is one of the few that are intelligible.

The original monophonic reel-to-reel recording was transferred to DAT. Samples were cut from the digital file in Sonic Foundry. All other work was done with Kyma. The processed Kyma sounds were recorded to a SCSI hard drive via DigiDesign’s Session8. Final mixing was also done in Session8. This work was done on two Windows computers that are linked via peer-to-peer networking.
