Resource 14 is the number assigned to Silica on the periodic table of elements. It’s also, in many ways the essence of sand. The work chronicles the imaginary emergence of artificial intelligence, something bought about by silica and its use in computer chips, through 2 distinct parts:
Resource 14 — Elements
Silica as Sand… a mindless and corporeal resource… In this section I have placed sand in a variety of environments and recorded the results. Part of the works æsthetic is one whereby a sense of intimacy has been created between sand and the observer, by uncovering some of the hidden sounds created by particles of sand as they nestle in dunes, rub together underwater, bounce off a variety of hardened surfaces or tumble down cliffs in large clumps etc.
The kind of ‘close-mic’ environment I was after wasn’t always achievable via conventional recording techniques so most of the recorded environments have been manipulated extensively using a variety of software.
