… calling to pump you up Tim Reed

On November 2, 2004, I received a very bizarre phone message. It began like this… “Hello, this is Arnold Schwarzenegger calling to pump you up to vote for President George W. Bush”. After being urged by Mr. Schwarzenegger to “go to the polls and flex [my] muscles,” I began to work on this piece. “… calling to pump you up” is not intended to be a political statement. Rather it is a commentary on the frivolous nature of a society that makes its political decisions based on marketing campaigns. The dark character of this piece is not intended to represent political opinions or feelings regarding the 2004 election. Instead, it expresses apprehension about the future of a society that requires phone calls from celebrities to get voters to the polls. “… calling to pump you up” weaves samples from the election-day phone message into an amorphous synth texture.
I tried not to over-manipulate the source material in this piece — the material speaks for itself.
