Dysroptia (2006)3:53Fritz FossJTTP 2006
The piece was earlier presented as my final project in a music technology course taken during the Fall 2005 term, whereby the instructor recommended I send it to the JTTP for submission. Dysroptia is my first foray into the world of digital audio processing.
The main sound source is a 30 second monophonic recording of an electric toothbrush. There is also a violin and three MIDI tracks (it was a requirement of the course to work with sampling and with MIDI). The violin was taken from a performance by David Glidden Calcafuoco, from a track by Jascha Narveson entitled “Crossroads” (1999). Jascha was our course instructor, and he presented this sample to the class as a common sound to process. I programmed the MIDI using Propellerhead Reason on a PC, and I recorded the toothbrush with a condensor mic, through a small Yamaha mixer, an M-Audio portable interface, and an an Apple laptop running Cubase SL. The piece was then put together and processed on a PC, using Cubase SL.
