Triptych (2017)12:27
A triptych is a piece of art (usually a panel painting) divided into three distinct sections that are hinged together to create a whole. Inspired by the continuity created between contrasting elements in this art form, each of the three composers created a 4:00 fixed media movement. The composition was crafted using a variety of live electronics and sampled elements, including a range of custom-built glass and percussive instruments that were designed and recorded specifically for this purpose. The three movements were combined into a singular 12:27 composition that was performed with the addition of live electronics on 7 March 2017 at the Black Box, Montréal. This is the recording of that live performance. Each of the piece’s three movements explore notions of gesture, texture movement, continuity and discontinuity from different perspectives. “Form” gives way to directionality and frenetic movement as the composition progresses. By blending and juxtaposing these different styles, we tried to imbue a sense of “flow” into the piece.
