In Memoriam Karlheinz Stockhausen Eldad Tsabary

Karlheinz Stockhausen passed away on December 5th 2007, just before the year of his 80th birthday in which numerous performances of his works were scheduled around the world. This short piece is a sonic portrait in his memory, in which the concept of “portrait” is taken rather literally. A picture of the composer was used as the source of the sounds, textures, transformations, and structure of the piece by use of a spectral-image to sound converter. Similarly to the restoration, coloring, and framing often done on old photo portraits, the sounds generated from the Stockhausen’s portrait have gone through a “sonic restoration” by use of signal processing and additional synthesis.
