To the Farther Erin Gee

To the Farther is inspired by techniques of ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response), featuring hand manipulated objects and closely recorded mouth utterances in order to “trigger” feelings of tingling euphoria in the listener. In imitation of sonic structures I observe in ASMR, I created moments of “silence that listens”, playful imagined moments where I use expectation to build brief climaxes into the piece, as well as imagined moments to listen to the body of the listener in silence. The textured sounds give the listener proximity to objects, my voice and my body as an instrument, and transport these sounds to more musical realms through digital manipulation. The title of this work, as well as the whispered words in this piece, are generated by a neural network, drawing attention to the algorithmic nature of ASMR, a practice of composing sound intended to “trigger” autonomous reactions from human sensory systems.
