Beyond The Skatepark Julianna Stein

Throughout my last two years in the city of Toronto, I. have found a strong sense of community through skateboarding. Through this sport, I. have met many people who have helped me to feel comfortable in my own skin, identifying as a Queer, female-presenting person. I. chose to capture and amplify the discussions between people I have met through skateboarding, highlighting their experiences in a heterosexual, male-dominated sport. Finding these stories within fellow skaters, I. captured conversations that naturally occur within the environment of the skatepark. I. then explored the skatepark as a space, following a path throughout the park based on my real-life experiences interacting with the space. From entering the park to recording discussions and capturing the ambience of learning a new trick, each recording is supported by a Queer environment.
