Habitats is a multi-movement computer music composition. Each movement consists of a dedicated algorithmic composition programme written in the chucK programming language. All sounds are realized using synthesis in chucK, including some new classes made especially for this piece. During the realization of the work, there is no intervention through performance, what is heard is a recording of the programme working through an environment (with some subsequent EQ and compression from a DAW). Each movement can be run for an indefinite amount of time or according to suggested durations (which are followed in this recording). The title reflects the fact that each movement acts as a kind of ecosystem in which organisms depend on one another, form customs and are affected by the consequences that emerge from each actor’s behaviour.
