This work is a series of three short independent compositions, each having their own harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic concerns; in other words, they are not movements of one larger work. However, I use the title to unite these works because they are inspired by recent discoveries that our universe is “vibrating”. A very exciting new concept, string theory, posits that our reality is vibrational — the result of countless sub-atomic, one-dimensional objects called strings. Each sub-atomic string is resonating across multiple dimensions, as if playing its own “note”. This mass of vibration we sense as matter or energy: light or sound, gravity and weight. As a composer, I am inspired by this idea that the universe is vibrating, like myriad orchestras, each with its own tunings, its own orchestrations and rhythms.
Each short work explores a unique set of vibrations that are not in our current tuning system, and evoke in me a mood, or another time or place, which are reflected in the individual titles.
