“Pulses” rediscovers the starting point of digital sound. The entire waveform of this piece consists of only two amplitude values: the maximum and the minimum, one and zero, all and nothing. Their interplay creates squared waves, glitchy noises, and silence. The title of the piece refers to electric pulses inside the digital circuitry.

The overall sound of the piece, raw, pulsating, elemental, grows from a single, deep tone, gradually building tension through additions of tones from the harmonic series. The new sounds cut into the previous ones, obfuscating or cancelling them altogether. Rapid successions of sounds create blurred and noisy illusions of harmonies and polyphonic textures. Reaching a climactic dissonant chord over several octaves in its middle, the piece gradually returns back to the starting tone, thus completing in one long and symmetric arc its journey from One into the illusion of Many, and back to One.
